Reviving History: Mantova's Secret Garden House

Blending Centuries-Old Art with Modern Design and Technology

Located in the historic city of Mantova, Italy, the 'Mantova New Life with Secret Garden' project is a testament to the power of design to bridge the gap between the past and the present. The project involved the restoration of a 16th-century house, including its exterior and garden, with the aim of revealing the building's soul, structure, and history.

The design team, led by Davide Cerini, was inspired by the city's rich history and the house's unique architectural features. They discovered frescoes on the walls and under the main wooden ceilings, which they decided to preserve and integrate into the new design. The challenge was to blend these centuries-old elements with modern design trends and technology, creating a harmonious balance between old and new.

The house's unique features include fully integrated climate control units hidden in bespoke furniture and walls, underfloor heating, and a home automation and light control system. A custom-made steel central stair with integrated LED light strip and made-to-measure stone steps adds a contemporary touch, while a mirror surface enlarges the space and draws attention to the frescoes. Roof light windows provide natural light in all the bathrooms, and fine modern design taps and faucets add a touch of luxury.

The project was not without its challenges. The team had to bring as much light as possible into the building, which had a medieval structure with small windows. They also had to coordinate with a restoration team to save the frescoes and replicate the correct material effect on the new walls. Despite these hurdles, the team managed to create a stunning space that respects the spirit of the place while showcasing the finest and most minimal design furniture.

The 'Mantova New Life with Secret Garden' project is a shining example of how design can honor the past while embracing the future. It was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017, a testament to the team's exceptional creativity and skill. As Davide Cerini and his team have shown, with careful planning and a deep respect for history, it's possible to create a space that is both timeless and thoroughly modern.
